The interest in exploiting Advanced Marine Vehicles (AMVs) as cargo vessels has grown in recent years, and has been boosted by the Japanese programme to develop a Techno-Superliner. This paper explores the economic viability of such vessels by deriving build and operating cost estimates for outline design solutions relating to three sizes of high speed ships. The required freight rate is calculated for each vessel option in an assumed operating scenario, which allows and assessment of the potential competitiveness of high speed ships designed exlusively to carry cargo. The sensitivity of the economic characteristics to parameters such as build cost or fuel price is also assessed, which identifies the critical components of the required freight rate. The results of the economic evaluation indicate that high speed cargo vessels such as Surface Effect Ships are unlikely to be viable, given the Required Freight Rates needed to sustain a service. However, since the transport costs are shown to be significantly less than those for airfreight, it is possible that a combined passenger and cargo high speed ship could attract a higher revenue than an exclusively passenger vessel. It is recommended that such an option be subject to further research.
