The paper describes a concept to detect the presence of a passenger as well as the presence and orientation of a child seat placed on the passenger seat. The automatic system was developed to cope with the incompatibility of a rear facing child seat and an inflating passenger airbag. Additionally it reduces repair cost in the case of unnecessary airbag deployment. The passenger presence detection is based on a force sensing resistor mat. The child seat presence and orientation detection is a transponder based system. The technology supports the rigid reliability requirements of a system which modifies the deployment behaviour of an airbag system.
