The eighties signalled the advent of the Japanese car manufacturers into the UK, equipped with the latest manufacturing concept of lean manufacturing. These manufacturing techniques provide the Japanese with a competitive advantage over their rivals. This paper describes the investigation undertaken to determine whether UK automobile companies were counteracting the Japanese threat by adopting their production methods. By using a postal questionnaire, the extent and success of the implementation of these methods within non-Japanese companies was determined. Most implementations have had some success, but company culture is seen as the greatest barrier to change. The companies seem reluctant to take the necessary steps to change the culture.
