The paper considers good aerodynamic design of freight vehicles, concentrating on four key areas: slipstreams generated by freight trains, aerodynamic drag, protection of loads carried in freight vehicles from wind-borne debris, and prevention of loss of particulate loads, particularly in strong cross-winds. These four areas are discussed from an aerodynamic view point, with a brief explanation given of the governing aerodynamic phenomena. Aerodynamic tests undertaken to examine the problems are briefly described. Examples are given of bad design practice and the resulting problems created for the railway users, staff and infrastructure as appropriate. The principles of good aerodynamic design are then outlined with some practical remedies that have already been successfully implemented.
