Rail traffic vibrations can be caused by train speeds that are higher than the Rayleigh wave speed in the ground (very rare), surface irregularities on wheels and rails, and fluctuating forces that are caused by parameter changes such as the stiffness changes on and between sleepers or variable elasticity of the ground. In order to keep the vibration amplitudes low, the speed should not be too high, the running surface should be smooth, and the support structure should be stiff and as homogeneous as possible. For the frequency range of interest, the track can be considered as a spring. Together with the wheel mass, it gives rise to a resonance. The vibration propagation in the ground is determined by the gross material properties, but also very much by the layered structure of the ground and by inhomogeneities. Thus predictions require either a large safety margin or a great amount of empirical data.
