Three different types of fiber-optic sensors are presented as possible elements of a fiber-optic based sensor system for ground traffic monitoring in an Experimental Surface Monitoring Guidance and Control System (ESMGCS). These are a fiber-optic light barrier, a fiber-optic Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer Vibration sensor (EFPI-V), and an interferometric strain gauge for simultaneous monitoring of ac and quasi-dc structural load variations. While the first of these sensors detects vehicle passage through interruption of an open light beam, the other two sensors are based on a more sophisticated design, and monitor mechanical vehicle road interactions. First steps toward interaction of the fiber-optic sensor system into the ESMGCS, based on a Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), are outlined.
