This paper is concerned with the ballistic impact response of 3-D two-step braided textile composite struck by a 36.1 g hemi-spherical tip-ended cylindrical projectile. A series of quasi-static punch tests have been conducted in order to investigate the progressive damage modes of target and to obtain the punch load-displacement relationship. In addition, a pneumatic launcher is used to propel the projectile with incident velocities ranging from 70 to 170 m/sec. The ballistic limit is experimentally determined to be near 74.1 m/sec. Commercially available finite element code (MARC) is incorporated with a constitutive relationship for 3-D two-step braided composite structure and the proposed static penetration model to simulate the dynamic impact response. Descriptions of the constitutive modeling of three-dimensional braided composite and the effect of penetration on the degradation of elastic stiffness for the specimen studied here will be presented in a separate paper. An energy consideration is applied to predict the projectile's residual (or terminal) velocity and ballistic limit. Numerical simulated result for projectile terminal velocities based on both the static and dynamic elastic properties are reported.
