At the Institute for System Dynamics and Control, University of Stuttgart, a self-contained, integrated navigation system for inland and coastal shipping is being developed. This system is cpable of automatically guiding the ship under normal traffic conditions, without requiring any installations external to the ship. The goal is seen in a substantial improvement of the safety on waterways, through relieving the navigator of tiring routine work and supporting him in complex situations, particularly at night or foggy weather. In this paper the configuration of such a navigation system suitable for large commercial inland vessels is explained. The results of a series of trials with the commercial push tow L16 (185 m, 10000 t) are pesented.
