General investigation on behavior with reference to phenomenon of squatting; by simple theory it is shown that for ship towed from bank there are 3 separate speed ranges, subcritical, critical, and supercritical; for self-propelled ship there is maximum speed beyond which it is impossible to go; as critical range is approached power required to move ship increases at phenomenal rate; model tests on effects of towing; Russian tests are cited on effects of self propelling.
