It will not be an overstatement to state that composite materials have become 'solutions in search of problems' especially in the areas of advanced aircraft and space technology. Composites will remain the materials of choice for the aircraft design engineers as long as higher strength and lower weight will remain the prime design criterion. Aerospace has provided the proving ground for many of these advanced materials, however, their applications have expanded in a wide varieties of fields including transportation, construction, medical and recreations. Composites have shown universally a weight saving of at least 20 - 30 % over their metal counterparts and a much lower operational and maintenance cost. Composite will continue to find applications in the futuristic demanding applications such as hypersonic aircraft and space stations, but the large scale growth in the composite industries wil require less costly processing methods, more automation and availability of more data for predicting the service life and mode of failure in the fields. In this paper therefore, a critical review has been presented of the present status of advanced composite and non-metallic materials, their applications and performance in the futuristic spacecraft and communications systems and their impact on achieving the twin goals of reduced weight and increased performance.
