Shape Energy Resources has developed a thermal management system for various types of electrochemical batteries including lead-acid, Ni-Cd, and Ni-metal hydride. The system utilizes the high energy density and temperature stability of Phase Change materials (PCM's), a group of reversible salt hydrates. Dependent upon temperature conditions, PCM melts to absorb heat from a battery or solidifies, to supply a battery with heat. Furthermore, PCM's can equalize the temperatures of different batteries within a battery pack. A mathematical model has been developed and tested against battery models, production batteries and battery packs to predict their thermal behaviour when equipped with the thermal management system. Based on this model, calculations show that electric batteries equipped wit Phase Change materials can succesfully operate through an extreme range of ambient temperatures from -40 deg C to +40 deg C.
