A prerequisite for the widespread introduction of electric vehicles is the safety and reliability of the drive train and the battery. The system must be abuse tolerant and in the extreme case of an accident, the user must not be subjected to any additional safety risks. The nature of the electrode and electrolyte materials as well as the packaging materials determine the performance, safety, reliability and recycleability of a battery system. Furthermore, extensive safety testing at the cell, battery and vehicle level is necessary to demonstrate the reliability and safety of the system and to qualify the product for the market. The paper will elucidate the intrinsic safety features of the ZEBRA Battery system which result from its specific materials composition. After a review of the electrochemistry of the system, a detailed analysis of the effects and different failure modes of the cells is presented. In conclusion, selected results from more than fifty different safety tests which have been performed during the last five years will be discussed and evaluated in terms of their influence on the design and the operation of the battery.
