One of the most catastrophic events a ship can experience is collapse of the hull girder due to extreme bendings moments. The Rules by the classification societies must assure that the probability of this event is sufficiently small. In order to develop a model for calculation of a probability of failure, it is necessary to develop probabilistic load and response models for the extreme bending moment and probabilistic models for ultimate bending moment strength. In this paper an efficient method is evaluated for describing - in probabilistic terms - the ultimate bending moment strength both in an intact condition and in demaged conditions simulating demages to the hull from grounding and collisions. Included in the method is also a probablistic description of material loss due to corrosion. When combined with a probabilistic load response model, it is possible to calibrate simple criteria which can be used in traditional design procedures and lead to design with a desired reliability level.
