The architecture of automotive systems is currently changing from a number of local, more or less isolated electronics to a functionally integrated distributed system which is linked by a network. This disengagement from local implementations is the platform for innovative control approaches in vehicles. Architectural trends are shown in microcontrollers, in the application of real-time operating systems, in networking and in a cost-effective application of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches. AI techniques like Fuzzy-Logic and Neural Networks can thus partly replace conventional algorithms for control, filtering, classification, estimation etc.
