Electrodialysis (ED) and electrodialysis reversal (EDR) have been used to desalt naturally occurring surface and groundwaters since the 1950's. EDR is being used successfully to desalt waters for reuse. Capacities of the process and the corrective actions possible when problems occur make EDR an attractive choise. The potential for fouling by colloidal material, organics and biogrowth are major concerns when considering membrane desalination in many water reuse applications. There are three ways organics can foul EDR systems. Very high levels of high molecular weight natural organics can build deposits on the surface of the membrane similar to colloidal fouling. Ocean State Power is the only location where it has been found. Secondly, high ionic man-made polymers can surface foul membranes interferring with EDR operation. These should be identified and evaluated before the overall treatment system is designed. Third, medium molecular weight ionic organics have a potential to internally foul the ion-exchange membrane resins. Man-made materials can be evaluated before committing to the project and naturally occurring organics have never fouled modern acrylic based membranes to a degree that requires replacement. In every instance there has been a practical low cost way to correct the problem or maintain operation without replacing membranes.
