A review of the growth of polymer matrix composites (PMC) in aerospace applications is presented together with an overview of the space environment. Three aspects of this environment are addressed in detail in terms of their effects on PMC materials - vacuum outgassing, atomic oxygen erosion and impact damage due to micrometeoroids and debris. Ground-based tests and space flight results are presented together with design models for analyzing and predicting these effects on PMC's. The challenges of using PMC's in space are clearly identified and the opportunities for overcoming them presented.
