The increasing number of fully integrated production- and manufacturing systems and the decreasing production times require very flexible and reliable part recognition and position determination systems. The development of appropriate hardware components and very powerful software packages was the basis for vision systems which nowadays meet those requirements. This paper shows, how real-time vision systems which are based on contour models are used for automatic 2D and 3D position determination in robot guidance systems. A number of real industrial applications are used as examples.
