Modern motor vehicles contain a wide variety of plastic blow-moulded components. These range from simple windscreen washer reservoirs to extremely complex fuel tanks, from low pressure air-ducts to high performance parts for engine intake systems, as well as bumper beams and spoilers etc. Whilst blow-moulded parts themselves may be relatively cheap to produce, the cost of developing them can be considerable. A newly developed finite element analysis program now makes it possible to simulate the production of even the most complex blow-moulded parts. The program not only simulates the blowing stage but also important parison-manipulation operations such stretching, closing, positioning and pre-blowing. It enables development engineers to carry out detailed feasibility studies as far back as the design stage. The program also features a wall-thickness minimization routine for producing the lightest part possible for a given wall strength.
