Recent years have witnessed a great increase in interest in the various methods of supercharging, and the development of novel supercharger configurations. Supercharging will gain in importance in the future for several reasons. Major of the reasons is that more emphasis on aerodynamically designed supercars (advanced ultralight hybrids) leaves less room for the supercharged internal combustion engine (ICE), or expressed in a different way, future supercharged ICEs ought to be designed for a specific power that is as high as possible. Minor of the reasons is, as a result of continuously increasing traffic density, a continually increasing requirement for a still higher acceleration capability of supercars must be assumed. Extreme of the reasons is the wish to save fuel that calls for high torque at low speed because only this feature allows comfortable driving in 'long' gears that save fuel. Uncontrolled ICE-mechanically-driven superchargers already were used in the 1930s. Later, as improved materials became available, uncontrolled ICE-pneumomechanically-driven turboblowers began to dominate the field. Their use resulted in better efficiency and lower noise levels. In view of the future, need for quick-reacting supercharged ICEs, the author is providing research and development (R & D) work on ICEs with novel mechatronically controlled autodrive- and autoaborbable flywheel (A2F) powered gyro-superchargers. Here also, novel methods of supercharging with the mechatronically controlled A2F powered gyro-superchargers offer new possibilities. The novel gyro-supercharger control systems are described and the improvements that result from their respective functions are compared in the paper.
