Complete new prototype engines were built and put on dynos or into workhorse vehicles for initial durability testing to establish what would fail first. A stepped dyno durability test was invented and consisted of two stages. During the first part of the test only mechanical loading was applied by raising engine speed. The second half of the test covered increased thermal loading by WOT (wide open throttle) running at higher engine speeds. The purpose of this test specification (Jogging Test) was to find out what is the weakest part of the engine and is the failure most likely caused by mechanical or by thermal loading. In case a failure occured, the area of the engine was reinforced and the test continued until the next problem was detected. This Find & Fix Method was very time consuming and very dangerous because failures could happen very late in the program. Many hardware iterations were required, which was bad for costs and timing.
