The Mercedes-Benz passenger car engine development department uses dynamic engine testing as an invaluable tool for optimizing engine performance and shortening development time. The paper outlines the capabilities of the facility and describes, how dynamic engine testing can be employed in engine exhaust emissions reduction. The experience indicates, that using a fully equipped dynamic engine test cell for testing a new engine under simulated dynamic road load conditions may significantly shorten combustion optimization. Since no test vehicle is required, either the expense for a vehicle can be saved, or else in case of a new line of vehicle, the combination engine/vehicle can be investigated long before a prototype vehicle becomes available, thus saving prototype capacity or costly modifications in existing vehicles. It is even possible to provide quantitative data on the effects of different vehicle weights or final drive configurations. Therefore we consider dynamic engine testing as an invaluable tool for our present engine development activities.
