The determination of the tractive effort of a vehicle on an exhaust emission chassis dynamometer is done indirectly (Acceleration, driving torque) of the chassis dynamometer. The friction losses of the chassis dynamometer (bearing friction and atmospheric friction) are added into the tractive effort measuring. Precondition for a high-exact tractive effort measurement is the perfect compensation of the speed dependant friction losses. The necessary absolute reproducibility of the friction losses can however for the bearing friction component only be guaranteed with a very high constructive expenditure. Therefore, a new principle for the torque measurement has been developed, with which the bearing friction is not included in the torque measurement. Constructionally complicated switchable mechanical flywheel mass sets will be more and more replaced by an electrical mass simulation, which thereby has to cover a larger mass range. Traditional mass simulation procedures have considerable stability problems in case of high vehicle masses to be simulated. A simple structural modification of the mass simulation control circuit avoids the said stability problems.
