Cables and wires are used to transmit current or signals from one electrical or electronic assembly to another. They are usually routed and bundled together to form a 'wire harness'. Due to expanding electronic features in most equipment, the role of the wire harness is becoming more and more prominent in many manufacturing fealds. Furthermore, wire harness assebmly is certainly one of the most difficult and time consuming assembly phases in manufacturing. For example, in a car, the wire harness is among the most expensive assemblies. A conclusion of wire harness assembly methods comparison, is that robotic cells are unlikely to be economical for typical harnesses used in the automotive industry. Designing the products for case of robot assebmly might to be only solution to make a robotized cell economical. Therefore typical rules of Design for Assembly are adapted to the wire harness. The design simplification leads to the definition of a new robotized cell which has been manufactured and tested. The economic performances of this new concept are evaluated and compared with the other classical solutions.
