3D CAD and Rapid Prototyping have revolutionized pattern making. A trend that is well underway is the conversion from conventional built pattern tooling which involved skilled trades pattern makers building tooling masters by hand using 2D drawings to a new form of pattern fabrication. This new pattern building technology combines 3D CAD and Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM). LOM is used to build the tooling master which is a substitute for the conventional hand build wood model. Rapid prototyping is than married with conventional tooling skills to develop parting surface and fabricate secondary pattern tooling. In some advance stages, the secondary tooling build is being eliminated by developing parting surface directly into the 3D CAD model and then building the final pattern directly using LOM. In either case, a signicant time saving is realized - as mach as 40-80 % reduction over conventional methods. 3D CAD and rapid prototyping increase productivity allowing more wors to be completed in less time with the same or fewer resources.
