Until this point in automotive body painting, it has been tried to obtain high quality and to automatise processes. As a result, the number of spray bells and machines have increased which results in a longer booth and higher paint consumption. Also, energy consumption has increased due to conditioning and controlling booth air flow in a longer booth and it has also become a large cost factor. It has become necessary to develop a lean and agile spraying system keeping high quality, high productivity, and a clean environment. Therefore, it has been developed an efficient and flexible spray painting system which can reduce the number of bells by half and can be installed in a 40 % shorter booth. The volume of paint consumption for one car body can be decreased 35 % from that of our present system which leads to less emissions. These improvements are done by developing a multi-feed electrostatic bell which is able to do a color change without paint loss and also by developing an arm type paint robot which applies a paint process much more efficiently than the conventional reciprocator.
