Collision warning techniques are being rapidly developed for roadgoing vehicles, and applications include intelligent cruise control, blind spot monitoring, parking aids, and obstacle detection. For each applicaton area, the specific requirements vary and it is usually necessary to tailor the sensing technique to the application. This paper presents an overview of the currently available electronic distance measurement techniques. The aim is to give a comparison of different sensing technologies across a number of key parameters so that the reader can choose the most appropriate technique for a particular application. Note that this paper considers mainly the problem of non-cooperative distance sensing - it means that the object to be sensed has not been modified to make it responsive to a particular sensing technique. The exception to this is vision systems, which need to be cooperative (or have significant prior knowledge) to give any distance measurement. The main techniques considered are ultrasonic, passive infrared, laser radar, frequency modulated-continuous wave radar, impulse radar, capacitive and video-based vision systems.
