In this paper, two-phase flow in multi-pass tube evaporator is experimentally investigated to elucidate the effect on the flow distribution of the following factors: total flow rate, quality at the header inlet, heating load on each pass, and number of passes. The experimental system simulated an evaporator for an automobile air conditioner which consisted of a horizontal header pipe with four vertical upward-going branch pipes (i.e., pass). Each branch pipe had an inner diameter of 6 mm while the main pipe inner diameter was 20 mm. To ensure the geometric similarity between the model and the actual evaporator, the inner diameter ratio of the branch pipe to the main pipe was set at 0.3. Refrigerant R11 was used as the working fluid. To take into account practical operating conditions in the actual evaporator, three different total flow rates were examined. The inlet quality was varied from the subcooled state to 0.4. Two kinds of experiments were performed, namely, with and without heating load on passes. Under no-heat load on passes condition, experimental data showed that the main tube flow condition had a great influence on flow distribution. Experiments with heating load indicated that as the heat load increased, the mixture flow rate in every pass became uniform. Finally, from analyses of pressure drop, the correlations of Lockhart-Martinelli and Saba-Lahey are found to predict acceptably the measured pressure drop data along the pass and at the junction, respectively.
