Laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) instrumentation developed for model submarine wake surveys is described. The instrumentation is housed inside the submarine body with optical access to the wake through two small holes in the submarine tailcone. The system is capable of three component mean velocity measurements over the entire propeller plane. Both nominal (no propeller) and total wake (with an operating propeller) surveys are possible. The project funding this work required careful attention to measurement errors during system design and usage. Some measurement results of the first application of this instrumentation (in the US Navy's Large Cavitation Channel or LCC) are presented. Using the measurement results and instrumentation details, an error analysis of the accuracy of the mean wake velocities is developed. The measured wakes are analyzed for accuracy and repeatability.
