At present, hydraulic-based actuators have been used to operate various valves of the aircraft engines. However, in order to increase the engine thrust-to-weight ratio and eliminate the hydraulic tubing and connections susceptible to leaks, the future aircraft systems will depend on electric controls. The major components of the electric control system need to be upgraded to at least 200 deg C. Advanced systems may require even 300 deg C operation. Among several types of components such as power transistors, diodes, conductors, resistors, and capacitors; the development of high temperature capacitors presents the most challenging problem. The challenge for technology is to produce capacitors providing simultaneous high capacitance (tens of micro farads), high voltage (28-400 volts), compact size, and high temperature capability. Advances in ceramic processing and thin film technology continually are being applied to existing applications and to the development of new applications in electronics and optical devices.
