This paper covers precision cooling in combustion engine cylinder heads. Previous studies have examined both the coolant circuit components and the mechanisms of heat transfer involved. The coolant heat transfer is characterised by the convective, nucleate, transition and film boiling regimes. Precision cooling is used to prevent component failures and to create an even distribution of temperature within the cylinder head. This leads to lower thermal stresses and higher component durability. It is also used to reduce the coolant pump flowrates and power requirements. The paper first examines the equations governing heat transfer to the coolant. Each of the heat transfer regimes is discussed in terms of the coolant properties and a suitable coolant heat transfer model is presented. This model is then included in a study of the cylinder head thermal load reduced to one-dimensional heat transfer. Finally a three-dimensional finite element model of a Ford concept cylinder head is used to test the coolant model. This study shows that - additional to the requirement for a minimum coolant velocity in the coolant passages - there is also an upper limit to coolant velocity.
