A mathematical model of parallel flow condensers used in automotive air conditioning systems has been developed for the prediction of their performance under operating conditions. The model developed is based on the application of fluid flow and heat transfer equations to the heat exchanger geometries. Fluid thermophysical properties have been introduced in the model for the refrigerant HFC 134a. An air-side heat transfer correlation has also been included in the condenser model. Correlations for the single-phase and two-phase frictional local pressure drops and momentum changes of refrigerant flow through the condenser have been used. The agreement between the model results and experimental data is shown to be good.
