To find a fundamental principle of combustion of degraded fuels, the authors have conducted combustion tests of residual fuels using a small-size high speed diesel engine for fishing boat. As a test engine, the 4A-1 engine of 110 mm bore, 115 mm stroke, 2600 rpm with direct injection system was used. Combustion tests were carried out with fuels of C200 and C500 produced by blending heavy fuel oil of 180 cSt at 50 deg C and marine diesel fuel oil with proportions of 66 % to 34 % and 84 % to 16 % respectively. Optimum injection mode to each fuel was investigated by varying the conditions of fuel injection timing, plunger diameter, cam velocity, nozzle hole diameter and fuel temperature respectively. The unfavourable conditions for degraded fuel combustion such as a small combustion chamber and a short combustion period were overcome by raising the jacket cooling water temperature. To improve the combustion of degraded fuel having inferior evaporation characteristics, air flow quantity was increased by 0.15 bar boosting up in order to supply abundant heat energy to fuel droplets. Confirmation of reliability and durability on the production engine during degraded fuel combustion was carried out by evaluating the thermal loading through measurement of temperature distribution in the cylinder liner and piston. As a result of the investigation, practical countermeasures for obtaining good combustion with C200 fuel were established which enable us to utilize C200 with almost equivalent combustion performance as that with marine diesel fuel oil.
