This paper describes a new technique associating a highly supercharged low compression ratio diesel engine with a split turbocharging system consisting in matching in a discontinuous way the supercharger air flow with the operating regime of the engine. This technique is applied to engines manufactured for boat propulsion with two typical modes of operation: normal mode for propulsion at full speed, economical mode for cruising at half speed. The specific aspects of this system and its application to engines of 1000 kW are described. Performance results are reported, including specific fuel consumption in various operating conditions. Namely, the low speed torque characteristics of these engines are disclosed in relation to the particular aspects of the propulsion of very high performance ships.
