The design philosophy of this new engine aims to add the merits of 2-stroke to those of 4-stroke engines, as far as cylinder power concentration, reliability and fuel economy are concerned. After a brief discussion of the criteria which led to the development of the engine type, the paper deals with the research and the development work and in particular: - The research work carried out on the combustion chamber of the two cylinder experimental engine in order both to minimize the thermal load of the components and to match the combustion space geometry to the air motion and fuel jets for good fuel consumption. - The investigations made on models and full scale engine with different timing and porting arrangements for the optimisation of scavenging taking into account relatively high engine rotational speed. - The results of the design improvements introduced on the fuel injection system and in the supercharging system. The paper also includes the results of bench tests of the experimental 2-cylinder engine and also of the prototype 5-cylinder engine and the results of the most significant measurements of temperature and hot components.
