The up-keep of diesel engines and especially such components as turbochargers, air coolers and fuel injection items greatly improves engine conditions in terms of cylinder wear, valve life times, specific fuel consumption while waste heat recovery in the exhaust gas boiler turbo generator system and thus the fuel saving aimed at is adversely influenced. The paper gives a survey to guide up-keep of diesel engines and components so as to optimise total fuel economy considering engines as well as exhaust gas boilers and turbo-generator system with due regard to avoid increased maintenance costs while retaining a high level of utilization of exhaust gas waste heat to cover daily need of fuel consumptions in normal operation at sea. Obviously, changing engine load conditions, climatic conditions and the characteristics of the particular engine types influence the optimum condition and must be taken into account. Simple key values are therefore evolved based on thermodynamic and economical considerations to guide selection of the best solution for a given ship and trade.
