The pressure pulsation in the exhaust pipe of constant-pressure turbocharged engines is a very much complicated one and badly affects gas exchange of the cylinders under certain circumstances. The simplest way to control the pulsation is to insert some orifices in the exhaust pipe. However, the dimensions, position and number of orifices required were experimentally determined at the shop trial of the engines. As the result of this study, it is now possible not only to predict the pulsation but also to design the orifices for pulsation control theoretically, if necessary. Also, it must be emphasized that the so-called 'volume theory' which neglects wave propagation in the pipe is impossible to simulate the pulsation of this system.
