The paper deals with results of trials with heavy fuels, carried out on two different types of high speed engines. The first part reports the tests made with a high-speed engine for railway traction running at 1500 rpm with a mean effective pressure of 235.5 psi. This engine has been running during more than 5000 hours on a heavy fuel of 1500 Redw.sec. The tests have been made so as to judge the influence of the characteristics of the fuels (sulphur content, Conradson index), upon the behaviour of the parts most subject to wear. The second series of tests has been made also with an engine meant for railway traction, but running at 1050 rpm, with a 223 mean effective pressure of 245.5 psi. The tests, which have already lasted 2000 hours, have been made with a heavy fuel of 3500 Redw.sec. and are still proceeding, with the special aim to study the behaviour of various versions of exhaust valves when the vanadium content of the fuel is in the order of 350 ppm to 400 ppm.
