The common hydro-mechanical systems for fuel injection in Diesel engines result in injection laws which typical shape is difficult to alter. It is not demonstrated that this laws are always perfectly adapted to what is required for a satisfactory combustion at all speed and load ratings. The principle of the present electronic fuel injection achieves injected fuel rates which are essentially time-functions and are almost independent of the crankshaft angular velocity. As a matter of fact, this principle is mainly based on the relations between the parameters 'pressure' and 'discharge section' and the 'time' variable. The mechanical simplicity of this system together with its high versatility due to the extreme speed of the electronic circuit response should lead to larger possibilities of acting on the injection diagram shapes. A detailed description of selected solutions is given for each component of the system: - servo-operated nozzle holder, - pumping and pressure regulation unit, - electronic circuit and its functions. These components have been separately tested and developed before being fitted on an experimental single-cylinder engine. Test results on this engine show that the performance is satisfactory compared with that of classical fuel-injection. The breaking up in fractional parts of the fuel injected per stroke has been tested and is an example of the various possibilities offered by the electronic fuel injection. Further developments on complex functions tied up with engine regulation can also be considered by taking advantage of the electronic circuits.
