The demands nowadays made on large-bore two-stroke diesel engines comprise the following problems: Simplicity, reliability and economy. A further aim is to concentrate an output as high as possible in one engine unit, which requires the adoption of constantly higher degrees of supercharging. Last but not least, the higher ship speeds should also be considered in the course of this development. Accordingly, the output range of the engines has been widened substantially. When operating at slow speed, the faster ships require low propeller speeds special attention must thus be given to partial load behavior. In this connection, supercharging and injection are of great significance. Apart from the conventional supercharging and injection systems, further systems have been developed in the course of the past few years. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate and compare several systems, also their suitability, particularly in respect of the above problems. Although the conditions were examined on loop-scavenged two-stroke engines, they are, for the greater part, valid in general also and may thus be transferred to other scavenge systems, too. In the full load range, special consideration must be given to the higher thermal load of the engines, which is expressed in the higher figure for the heat to be transferred. The thermal stress in the heat conducting walls of the combustion space may take on quite remarkable values, mainly because the wall thickness must be increased at the same time on account of the higher mechanical load. An increase of the heat quantity is equivalent to an increase of the temperature gradient which is proportional to the thermal stresses. In order to keep these within admissible limits, it is customary to dissipate part of the heat directly through the scavenge air. For determining the necessary excess air, economic points of view are primarily predominating in respect of fuel consumption and the necessary design.
