The paper reports the results obtained during a series of tests carried out on a 670 mm bore, opposed piston, turbocharged marine diesel engine over a range of loads, speeds and scavenge air quantities and pressures. Tests were carried out at up to 155 p.s.i. I.M.E.P. and 130 r.p.m.. Comprehensive instrumentation, including the fitting of some 125 thermocouples, enabled cylinder liner and piston temperatures to be measured over the whole range of conditions. Cylinder liner isotherm maps were obtained directly from the measured temperatures, and piston isotherm maps were obtained from the measured temperatures by the use of an electrical analogue. The heat flows through the cylinder liners and through the piston crowns were calculated from the isotherms, and the relationships between engine operating conditions, metal temperatures, heat flows and coolant side heat transfer data are presented. By the use of the correlations obtained, the effects of changes of operating conditions, for example of further uprating, may now be predicted. Consideration of the data so obtained would materially assist in the design of piston and cylinder liner metal thickness and coolant side conditions so as to minimise thermal loadings,
