In this report, the author sets out the significance of the diesel engine for the origin and constitution of modern inland navigation. Upon a survey on the diversity of the dimensioning data for the required outputs of the engines, resulting from practical inland navigation, the necessity of a reasonable typization and limitation of the multitude of naval engines available at present will be pointed out with regard to the requirements of the inland navigation. The type of man being active in inland navigation, his reaction to the new operational conditions necessitated by the motorization will be especially characterized. The resulting consequences for operation, maintenance and service of diesel engines in practical inland navigation may be of particular significance to the designer of these engines. As man, or more precisely, the availability of suitable personnel has become one of the most important factors for the practical operation, the problems of repair and of service connected here to prove to be equally important assumptions for inland navigation. In spite of the fact that the applications of the diesel engine for land transportation and for inland navigation purposes are not comparable, there should be particular emphasis on the creation of a service which is equally well supported and similarly well scattered in regard to its localization as that one already available for land transportation. The application of diesel engines has contributed essentially to the development of new types of inland vessels and their power plants. The introduction of the pusher-type navigation on the West European inland waterways of the Rhein and Seine rivers constitutes an almost revolutionizing change for the inland navigation. The statements reveal a picture of this development which the practical inland navigation hopes to result in substantially simpler operational conditions and in a true rationalization of this important transportation branch.
