Four years ago the author's company developed a crosshead type two-cycle marine Diesel engine with exhaust-gas turbo-charger, known as the UEC engine. This engine subsequently became one of the main products of the Nagasaki Works, but experiment and research also continued at that time in an effort to produce a small, light, and high powered engine, and it was in 1955 that the UET engine of trunk piston type was finally completed. This is a high-supercharged engine, with a much higher mean effective pressure than other engines of similar design, and is capable of being supercharged up to the maximum output by exhaust-gas turbo-chargers only. Both the engine itself and the exhaust-gas turbo-charger are of unique design. This paper deals with the special features on design and the trial results of this engine, and further explains the various experiments and research which were carried out prior to its completion.
