Motala Verkstad, in Sweden, has built a diesel locomotive with a new method of transmission. By means of a differential, the output of the diesel engine is divided into two parts: one is absorbed by an air compressor, the other is transmitted directly to the driving wheels of the locomotive. A part of the compressed air supercharges the engine, the remainder and the exhaust gases pass through a combustion chamber and are then expanded in a gas turbine. Engine gearbox, compressor, turbine and accessories form a unit of light weight and small overall dimensions. Bench tests, in Sweden, have proved an optimum fuel consumption of 190 g/HP.h at the output shaft of the gear-box. The curve of tractive efforts depending on the 275 locomotive speed is comparable to that of classic transmissions. The output available at the wheels of the locomotive is, at full power, equal to the output of the diesel engine; the transmission losses are compensated by the gain obtained owing to the combustion chamber.
