A recent series of two-stroke engines with loop scavenging specially developed for use in locomotives is described in this article. Starting from the considerations which led to the selection of this working process, the main design features of the engine are described, and its advantages for railway traction are emphasized. The advantages mainly are: long service life owing to low piston speed, simple design, and low space requirements.
