The advantages in general of the use of diesel engines for railway traction and the main problems to be tackled when dieselizing a railway are treated. The differences in the conditions in Europe and those in the U.S.A., and how the experience gained in the U.S.A. can be applied in Europe is dealt with. A special study of the dieselization of a railway line in Norway, and a proposal of a standard medium size shunting locomotive are discussed. In order to reduce the manufacturing cost the number of types of diesel locomotives should be brought down to a minimum. The importance of a close collaboration between manufacturers and users as regards servicing etc. is stressed.
