A turbocharged direct-injection (DI) compression-ignition (CI) ethanol engine, based on a 3-cylinder diesel engine, has been developed. The effects of two different turbochargers were examined. The compression ratio (CR) of the engine was increased from the original value and also the effects of two different compression ratios were investigated to achieve compression ignition over a wide load-speed range. At low loads an intercooler acted as an ignition aid by preheating the charge air. An oxidation catalyst was used for exhaust gas purification. Special emphasis was laid on reducing the NO(x) emissions. This paper describes the different phases during the development work. The performance characteristics and exhaust emissions of the optimized ethanol engine are reported and the results are compared with those of the base diesel engine. Also, the aldehyde and alcohol emissions and effects of an ignition improver are briefly discussed. The test engine is a water-cooled 3-cylinder Valmet 320 DI diesel engine. Details of the base engine configuration are presented in a table. This type of diesel engine is typically used in tractors. The results of the experiment with ignition improver were promising. A small amount (2 mass-%) of ignition improver had a clearly positive effect on the engine low load operation. This development project on an ethanol-fueled compression-ignition engine has increased the preparedness to use alcohol as an engine fuel in heavy-duty vehicles. However, further investigations are needed to improve the performance characteristics and to increase the operation reliability of the ethanol engine. The next step in the development work could be to examine the effects of ignition improver together with lower compression ratio (e = 22). Also, an investigation of high pressure ignition equipment might be productive.
