To design and manufacture a commercial or military aircraft typically requires several years. Many benefits may be gained by shortening the design to fly cycle time, especially bringing a product to market faster than a competitor and responding more quickly to customer requirements. However, the reduction of time-to-market does not necessarily reduce the net cost of the design process. In many cases, the same amount of work will only be compressed into a shorter schedule. This may actually result in higher design and manufacturing preparation costs. The goal should be to reduce the flow time required to design an aircraft by reducing the labor hours and/or cost required to perform the design and manufacturing preparation tasks. An emerging computing technology called Knowledge-based Engineering shows great promise of reducing the time and cost of designing aircraft structural components and creating the required manufacturing support information. This technology automates the design process by executing a set of preprogrammed rules and methods for a particular part family. These rules resemble those which drive the traditional design process, but they have been encoded into a knowledge-based system. The major benefit of using knowledge-based systems is the ability to create designs at a fraction of the time required for a human to perform the same tasks.
