The Tiger is the new anti-tank and attack helicopter being developed by EUROCOPTER FRANCE and EUROCOPTER DEUTSCHLAND under a contract from the French and German Governments. This paper presents the work which was carried out by EUROCOPTER to tune the aerodynamic configuration of the TIGER through a combination of theoretical analysis, wind tunnel tests and flight tests. More specifically, it concentrates on three aspects where the help of wind tunnel and flight testing is traditionally necessary to optimize the design: horizontal stabilizer design and position, main rotor hub wake effects and engine air intakes design. For each of these aspects, the design criterion used during the design phase of the TIGER are presented and discussed, as well as the rationale which led to select the configuration of the prototype at the beginning of its flight tests. The first flight test results indicated that some of the design objectives were not fully met due to various aerodynamic interactions. The paper describes the approach taken to rapidly develop the modifications which solved the identified problems coming mainly from rotor and hub wake effects and engine gas reingestion.
