The forces exerted by a waterjet on the ship structure can reach significant magnitudes. Some of these forces are of cyclic nature which requires the jet-ship flange connection to be designed for fatigue. An overview is given of the most important loads created by the waterjet in different operational conditions. Fatigue data on aluminium is combined with a simple axi-symmetric model for the calculation of stresses in flanges to give some guidelines for the design of flange connection between waterjets and ship.
