The U.S. Army Airworthiness Qualification Test Directorate (AQTD) recently conducted tests to evaluate the requirements of the flight test maneuvers of Aeronautical Design Standard 33C (ADS-33C) for relevance to the cargo helicopter role. A CH-47D helicopter was used for the test. Qualitative results were gathered and recommendations were made as to the acceptability of existing maneuvers for the role. Several of these were considered to be suitable without further development. Others were modified in terms of maneuver design and/or task tolerance limits and new maneuvers were developed for external load operations. The handling qualities of the CH-47D were also assessed. Future programmed tests, using a fully instrumented helicopter, will assess the relevance of the quantitative requirements of ADS-33C to the cargo role and retest the developed flight test maneuvers.
